By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA windy storm dumped rain on Santa Paula and lightning caused power outages - and the report of a structure fire - throughout the city early Monday morning. According to Santa Paula Fire Captain Dan Campos, a lightning strike to a house at the entrance to Adams Canyon on Foothill Road causing a structure fire was reported at about 3 a.m.Although the SPFD was called out by the Ventura County Fire Department for mutual aid, upon arrival of firefighters, “It turned out not to be an emergency,” noted Cpt. Campos. Although lightening had struck in the area, it had not ignited the structure as believed by the occupants, Cpt. Campos added.
But several lightning struck transformers throughout the Santa Clara River Valley, including in Santa Paula, meant lights out for a number of homes when the electrical power was interrupted. Southern California Edison Region Manager Nancy Williams was in Rosemead Monday morning, and noted that there was much activity at the utility company due to the storm’s impacts on power poles and lines. Williams said she would have more information once she arrived back in Ventura office and could gather input on the storm’s damage to the area’s electrical power supply equipment. It was just late last week that the temperature in Santa Paula hit the 90s. Although the storm was forecast, it has hit harder than expected, but the weather has proved it ultimately will not be what is expected this year especially. Thunder, lightning and periods of heavy rain continued Monday morning, a weather pattern expected to last several days.
