The Ventura County Community Foundation (VCCF) has awarded more than $600,000 in scholarships to 217 outstanding local students as part of its annual scholarship program. The dollar amount of scholarships awarded this year by VCCF represents a doubling from just a year ago as well as an expansion of several key initiatives.“None of this would be possible without the many donors here in Ventura County who established funds with the express purpose of staking the next generation to a better future,” said Mary Leavens Schwabauer, chair of both the VCCF board as well as its scholarship advisory. “We are thrilled to be able to help so many deserving students pursue their dreams of obtaining a college education.” VCCF has over $12.8 million in endowed funds for scholarships and student-related programs. This scholarship amount represents a significant expansion of VCCF’s scholarship efforts, which have blossomed since the Community Foundation first began awarding scholarships in 1992. With this year’s awards, over $1.9 million in awards have been made to Ventura County students. Of particular note this year is the expansion of the James Basile Scholarships, due to the $6 million bequest of Simi Valley attorney James Basile. The Basile Scholarships are providing $20,000 awards to 15 students, which are payable over four years with certain requirements, a significant increase from prior years.Students awarded this year also include the second cycle of the Orfalea Nursing Scholarships, provided to students who intend to practice nursing in Ventura County. These awards are provided through a three-year grant from the Orfalea Fund of Santa Barbara. This is an important part of an initiative by the Community Foundation to expand the supply of nurses in Ventura County, which was recently supplemented by the establishment of a $750,000 loan forgiveness fund in conjunction with the County of Ventura.Several new memorial funds made their first awards this year, including the David Casavan Memorial Scholarship, which was awarded by his widow Carolyn, and two funds in honors of young men recently killed, the Michael DiRaimondo Scholarship and the Michael Frick Scholarship. Both the DiRaimondo and Frick families were in attendance at the recent awards ceremony. The first awards from a scholarship fund established by the Ventura County chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP) were given to five students, one each attending Ventura College, Moorpark College and Oxnard College and two attending California State University, Channel Islands.
