Thank you for fixing the streets To the Editor:To the City of Santa Paula, I know it took a while to fix up Santa Barbara Street and Peck Road but I just want to say thank you for fixing up those two streets and doing a very good job of it. Driving down those two streets day and night now is just as wonderful as ever thanks to the hardworking city maintenance people. The streets are as good like they used to be and I just want to say thank you for doing a good job and nothing but a good job as well as a great job, for that matter. So keep up the good work for continuous maintenance improvements and continue to do a great job. Thank you.John A. BravoSanta PaulaCommercial liesTo the Editor:The Bush Administration is so desperate and afraid to lose their power that they resort to lies in their commercials. If I didn’t know better when I saw the commercial that said that Kerry will raise taxes by $900 billion, I would have believed it. Instead Kerry said he will lower taxes for working families, but those who earn more than $200,000 will pay taxes according to the pre-Bush rate. He promised to close corporate tax loopholes. It is unfair that corporations to avoid their payment of taxes have offices in offshore islands. The bigger the corporation, the greater its ability to have tax shelters. That is not fair. It is time for change.I recently learned that members of Congress have a separate plan for social security. When they retire they receive the same pay until they die. For example: former Senator Byrd and Congressman White and their wives may expect to draw $7,800,000 with their wives drawing $275,000 during the last years of their lives. Of course younger members who retire at an early age will receive more during the rest of their lives. What is the cost for this great plan to them? NADA! All these moneys are paid by us taxpayers from the General Funds! Truly, it is time for a change.Who are they kidding when the Bush Administration claims the jet fighters could not go up to prevent 9/11? We should insist that General Richard Myers, who was in charge of sending up the jet fighters, publicly testify under oath. Instead of being fired, he was promoted! What a joke!Marguerite PetersonSanta PaulaCity Hall “Fire Sale”?To the Editor:If, as rumor has it, the City Hall and adjoining property are “on the market to be sold,” it may be time for public discussion, a public disclosure of any offers, and a public decision in regard to all alternative plans.
If a real estate sales agreement, or offer, is in work already, that option and those terms should be a matter of public knowledge and public discussion as well.In the interest of fairness, all city developmental plans, property exchanges or purchases, and city revitalization programs should be open to public view, and totally free of conflicts of interest, privilege or personal advantage. The City Hall is the property of 28,000 citizens and, in everyone’s best interest, no private or privileged agreements or personal profits should be allowed. If there is a projected real estate plan in the works, let’s hear from our Council, City Manager and Development group soon.John UrieSanta PaulaWell she did it againTo the Editor:Well it looks like Kathy Long has done it. She defeated Mike Morgan for a third time. After all, look what she has done for us and what she’ll want to do for us later on, working to keep the promises that she made during her time in office, things that she had wanted to do when she first went in.Well, I’m just happy to say that I’m glad that Kathy won again for a third time and I know just like the others she’ll do a good job. The other two terms that is. So keep up the good work Kathy and continue to do a good job, too, okay.Thank you.John A. BravoSanta Paula
