One of the first duties of Santa Paula’s Mayor, naming City Council members to various local, county and state committees and commissions was accomplished at the January 4 meeting with only one surprise.

According to Vice Mayor Jenny Crosswhite, the Santa Clara Valley “Neighborhood for Learning said they did not need a representative from the City Council…”

After Mayor Martin Hernandez determined the city does not fund any portion of the organization or has  nan ongoing relationship with the group he said, “I’m perfectly fine in adopting,” his recommendations as well as removing Neighborhood for Learning from the list.

The full council approved the motion.

Local Standing Committees include: Crosswhite and Councilwoman Ginger Gherardi remaining as the members of the Santa Paula Unified School District/City Council committee; Councilman Jim Tovias as the liaison to the Economic Development Advisory Committee; Hernandez as the member to the Fish Ladder Authority and the Santa Paula Basin Pumpers Association; and Tovias, an insurance agent remains the member of the California Joint Powers Insurance Authority, with City Manager Jaime Fontes the alternate member.

County Standing Committees include: Animal Regulation Commission with Hernandez remaining the member; the Association of Ventura County Cities always includes the Mayor as the member and the Vice Mayor as the alternate; Economic Development Collaborative—Ventura County, and the separate Ventura Council of Governments (VCOG) have John Procter as the member and Tovias the alternate; Ventura County Air Pollution Control District Advisory Committee, Hernandez the member and Procter the alternate; in a switch for the Ventura County Regional Energy Alliance, Procter is the member and Hernandez the alternate; Ventura County Transportation Commission/VISTA Commission, Gherardi the member and Procter is the alternative; Ventura County Transportation Commission, Gherardi, who led the agency as executive director for 17 years, is the member; and the Ventura Regional Sanitation District, which operates the Toland Road Landfill midway between Santa Paula and Fillmore, has Hernandez as the member and Crosswhite as the alternate.

The presiding Mayor and city manager traditionally represent the lone State Standing Committee, the California League of Cities Liaison for State Senator and Assemblymember which this year will be filled by Hernandez and Fontes.
