The Santa Paula High School Cardinal Marching Band, Drum Line and Color Guard performed on Sunday, December 13, at the home of Andy VanSciver and Marleen Canniff, who won the band’s personal performance in the Win-a-Band raffle. Led by Music Director William Melendez and Assistant Director Jerry Cruz, the nearly 70 Cardinal musicians marched in step up Ralph Way, playing tunes with flags spinning and drums drumming. The band performed in the backyard of VanSciver’s house for more than a half hour, entertaining friends and family and the entire block with holiday cheer and award-winning talent. Mayor Martin Hernandez spoke at the event, thanking the band members for their performance and for the Santa Paula pride they brought to the Camarillo Christmas Parade the day before, where they won four awards: 1st Place Drum Major, 1st Place Color Guard, 2nd Place Band, and 2nd (Honorable Mention) for Best Use of Theme. The Win-a-Band fundraiser not only gives winners a personal marching band performance, it also helps to fund the Cardinal Music Program for equipment and travel throughout the year.
