James (Jim) Procter, founder and managing partner at Procter, Slaughter & Reagan, LLP (http://psrllp.com), was awarded the Trial Lawyer of the Year Award by the Ventura County Trial Lawyers Association (VCTLA). The prestigious award, recognizing civil trial achievement coupled with a commitment to a high ethical standard, is given annually to a member of VCTLA. Procter is the first litigator to receive the award for work done from the defense chair, traditionally an honor reserved for plaintiff members. Fellow nominees included Matthew Haffner, Jim McDermott, Jon Light, Alan Templeman and Dean Hazard.“This award speaks volumes about our dedicated team of attorneys and staff at Procter, Slaughter & Reagan,” said Jim Procter, partner at Procter, Slaughter & Reagan, LLP. “I consider it an honor to practice law, and now to be recognized among my peers is particularly gratifying.” A native of Ventura County, Procter has been practicing law in the County for over 25 years, with a litigation track record that is hard to match. He has tried dozens of lawsuits to verdict in state and federal court. In 2008 alone, Procter tried three cases to verdict, representing the defendant in each. In one case, Procter’s client received a defense verdict after a $125,000 offer was rejected. In another, the verdict was nearly two-thirds below the final demand and, in the third case, his client received a defense verdict after a statutory offer was rejected. His case success is paired with his stellar reputation based on an unwavering integrity and professionalism. Procter’s litigation style is often described as straight-forward, reality-based and never condescending - he is known to treat jurors with respect and as intelligent people. As founder of Procter, Slaughter & Reagan, he has set a standard of top-notch advocacy for the 20-attorney firm.
