Principally engaged in the growing and harvesting of timber, the manufacture, distribution and sale of forest products, and real estate construction, development and related activities, Weyerhaeuser employs about 85 people at its Santa Paula packaging plant on West Santa Barbara Street.Also affected by the sale are the Hueneme Paper Mill in Oxnard and a second packaging business located in Camarillo. Other California-based packaging locations are in Anaheim, Compton, Elk Grove, Exeter, Modesto, Salinas and Sanger; a specialty packaging plant in Cypress; a kraft bag and sack location in Buena Park; and recycling facilities in Fremont, Los Angeles/Norwalk and West Sacramento.Once the deal is completed - expected to be finalized in the second half of 2008 - Weyerhaeuser, based in Federal Way, Washington, will focus on its timber, wood products and real estate operations. Through the deal International Paper becomes a stronger presence on the West Coast with its large agricultural and produce markets.Weyerhaeuser Co. has been a solid community supporter, donating goods to Santa Paula Beautiful! and other events, as well as supporting Blanchard Community Library by sponsoring a team of sometimes top spellers for its annual FLAIR Bee for Literacy.

Weyerhaeuser Co. announced the sale of its containerboard, packaging and recycle business to International Paper, a $6 billion cash deal that is expected to have no impacts on operations, including its Santa Paula-based packaging plant.

The March 17 announcement is just the first step in the deal that still must be approved by regulators.The nationwide transaction includes nine containerboard mills, 72 packaging locations including the Santa Paula plant, 10 specialty-packaging plants, four kraft bag and sack locations, and 19 recycling facilities, affecting approximately 14,300 employees.Weyerhaeuser Company is one of the world’s largest forest products companies. Incorporated in 1900, in 2007 the company saw sales of $16.3 billion.
