Ish Cordero, Matthew Duenas, 19, was arrested less than a week after the May 31 search.“We received information from Crime Stoppers on where Duenas was staying...he was staying with his girlfriend right across the street from the police station” located on South 10th Street. The anonymous tipster said that Duenas would “come late in the evening or in the early morning,” said Sgt. Cordero. The first time the SPPD was notified that Duenas was at the residence he was gone by the time Officers arrived but the second time he was at his girlfriend’s home.“SPPD Officers gave a ‘knock notice,’ he refused to answer the door and tried to get out the back door but Officers were there already...he was arrested” on charges related to felony and misdemeanor narcotics warrants “without further incident.”
Duenas and Michael Pulido, 19 of Santa Paula, the driver of a vehicle he was riding in, were in were spotted on May 31 by Officer Ryan Smith who was patrolling the downtown area on his bicycle at about noon. When Officer Smith attempted to make contact the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed, blowing through stop signs and sparking the chase.Duenas jumped from the vehicle...Pulido was later found by SPPD Officers and their K-9 partners hiding in a sewer tunnel.A VCSD helicopter was also summoned to search the area from the air and two area schools were locked down during the search.Pulido was arrested for reckless driving, conspiracy to commit crime and aiding and abetting a felon. The SPPD’s partnership with Ventura County Crime Stoppers paid off: a tipster called the anonymous hotline (524-0907) and now may be eligible for a $1,000 cash reward.“The SPPD really appreciates those citizens that get involved - even anonymously - to make their communities safer,” said Sgt. Cordero.
