By B. J. Harding, President, SPUHS Alumni Association Born in Oklahoma to Henry and Bessie Stockton Hayes, Larry was one of four children. During the “Dustbowl” era, the family made several trips back and forth from Oklahoma to California, working in the cotton fields of the San Joaquin Valley and eventually ending up in Santa Paula. Larry and his siblings, Rita (‘62), Dennis (‘66) and Lana (‘68), were educated at Briggs, Glen City and Isbell schools before coming to SPHS.During high school, Larry played freshman football. He was in the Boys Federation and also the C.H.A. During his school years, Larry worked as a box boy at Bayless Market, and also at the local bowling alley (where he managed to bowl a couple of perfect games). He always came home late, but still managed to get to classes the next day.Following graduation, Larry enrolled in Ventura Junior College. In 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a military policeman. After service to his country, Larry returned to Ventura County and got a job as a deputy sheriff with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department. While with the Sheriff’s Department, he worked patrol in the county and in the City of Camarillo, as a narcotics detective, and in the crime lab and records department. He also opened and owned Tony’s Burrito Hut in East Ventura from 1973 to 1977.While working full time as a deputy sheriff, Larry went back to college. He received his A.A. in Business Administration at Ventura College in 1972 and his B.S. in Business Management at California Lutheran University in 1974.At this point, feeling he had too much on his plate, Larry quit the Sheriff’s Department and moved to Santa Clara University, where he received his law degree in 1980, graduating magna cum laude. While here, he worked as a law clerk for Justice William Clark on the California Supreme Court. After law school, Larry went to work for the firm of Hoge, Fenton, Jones & Appel in their Monterey office, which later became Fenton & Keller. He became a shareholder in the firm in 1986, and worked as a trial lawyer handling civil litigation in real estate, personal injury and business matters.
Larry has been a active member of his community, serving as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America and the Special Olympics.Larry married Lane Christensen, and they have a family of seven children. When they had just three small children, they spent a lot of time reading to the children. Larry got the idea to write a book for each child and leave them a legacy. The idea turned into a business, and one may order these books by going to mynamestartswith.com on the Internet.Larry and Lane’s four oldest children grew, married, and presented them with five grandchildren. The three youngest are home with them in Carmel Valley, California. On July 7, 2005, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Larry Hayes as judge to the Monterey County Superior Court -- a deserving title for a very ambitious young man, “His Honor, Larry Hayes.” Another outstanding alumnus of Santa Paula High School.
