By Brian D. WilsonSanta Paula TimesDr. Luis Villegas, Superintendent of the Santa Paula Elementary School District says the recently announced agreement with the developer of Fagan Canyon will bring some good things for the Santa Paula Community.Centex Homes has agreed to build two new elementary schools at the future planned community of Fagan Canyon. The agreement, announced a week ago, includes $1.2 million provided by Centex for the acquisition of furniture and equipment at each of the school sites. Centex will contribute $220,000 for administrative start-up costs at each school and $150,000 will be paid to the district to assist in the acquisition of a middle school site somewhere within the school district boundaries. The agreement was hammered out over a series of five workshops. Centex has agreed to include school district and public input into the design of the schools.
“We were most interested in making sure that we end up with schools that are going to be conducive to our community and also be able to suit our kids in the number of children that we anticipate will be coming into that particular area,” said Dr. Villegas. “A lot more work needs to be done.”The planning period is expected to run about two years, with another year for construction. Once the project is improved Dr. Villegas says it’s important to name a school. He adds that he believes they’ll need administration on site six months before the school opens, in addition to an office manager and custodial support. As far as teacher staffing, Dr. Villegas assumes that transfer requests from existing teachers in the district would be looked at first. All this would be done after talks with the Santa Paula Federation of Teachers and the California State Employees Association. If the Fagan Canyon project is scaled back in some way, the superintendent assumes that the agreement would be modified as well.
