By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA Santa Barbara man was killed and a Fillmore woman seriously injured in a Highway 126 head-on collision Tuesday near Piru, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman. The collision was just the latest fatal accident that has occurred in recent months on the highway, now regaining the macabre nickname of Blood Alley. The two-car crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m. east of Center Street during a rainstorm on December 7. David Masters, 47 of Santa Barbara, lost control of his eastbound Ford Taurus swerved into oncoming traffic. He was pronounced dead at the scene.Esmeralda Socorro Velasco, 19 of Fillmore, was driving west in a Dodge Neon when Masters’ Taurus struck her vehicle head-on when it crossed the divider. Velasco was transported by helicopter to Ventura County Medical Center with major injuries and on Thursday her condition was still listed as critical, according to a VCMC spokeswoman. Both Masters - who was heading to a Las Vegas business conference - and Velasco were alone in their vehicles at the time of the crash.
All four lanes of traffic were shut down for about 20 minutes to allow the helicopter to land; later one eastbound and one westbound lane were opened.Although it was raining at the time of the crash the cause has not yet been determined.Just last week, on December 4, Juan Angel Rangel, 21, of Oxnard was killed when the vehicle he was riding in westbound went out of control and overturned on Highway 126 near Edwards Road at about 4:15 a.m.He was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver, Julian M. Munoz, 22, also of Oxnard, was injured and transported to Ventura County Medical Center.Munoz lost control of the vehicle, which first rolled on the dirt median before he overcorrected, according to a CHP spokesman. The vehicle then overturned when it came back onto the highway and was struck by at least two passing vehicles.
