“The rummage sale was very successful,” said Boys & Girls Club Chief Executive Officer Pat Zwagerman, but the labor-intensive event would not have been possible without volunteers.Garfield and his staff accepted donations and kept them stored at Cal-West and other volunteers helped customers find that just-right item while others manned checkout. The club even got a bonus: “We purchased chairs for our office and I found some old rock ‘n’ roll records,” said Zwagerman.Overall, “It’s nice to see that other people’s junk is valued and needed by other people. And it was wonderful that the rummage sale benefited our boys and girls club and the kids we serve,” with a variety of programs and projects.Garfield, a former Santa Paula City Councilman and Mayor, had staged the event in past years to benefit the local anti-graffiti organization but this year decided that the event would benefit the Boys & Girls Club.“The city has been great about stepping up to the plate and eliminating graffiti so we figured we’d do the rummage sale for the kids!”
