The Student Development Program began in June 2004, and allows high school students from Santa Paula, Renaissance and Gateway to give back to their community and help with character development. The program is a partnership with the City of Santa Paula, the Santa Paula Union High School District and the Police Department’s School Resource Officer Program. The Student Development Program is one of its kind; the Santa Paula Police Department School Resource Officer Program is the only one that works with the students and community directly. The Community Service Program allows students who receive citations or who have made poor choices while at school or in the community to choose community service options. They meet on Saturday mornings with the School Resource Officer.Students from throughout Santa Paula have already completed hours performing services such as painting over graffiti and tagging, helping to beautify the community, picking up trash and, recently, sifting sand and going through the sandboxes with the Kiwanis Club to make Mill Park clean and safe for children. The Career Development project partners students who want to work in the community to get a job at young ages. The School Resource Officer meets with businesses and employers throughout the city and gets information on what type of high school youth they are looking for. Students routinely meet with the officer, and the student completes an application along with a simulated job interview. Students who qualify for this project receive a recommendation from SPUHSD Security and the School Resource Officer; summer job placements are in progress.
In addition, other programs that are available include Anger Management, which is based on the recommendation of the School Resource Officer; students are required to attend Anger Management based on observations made by the police or school officials. This program is run jointly with Ventura County Probation; classes are held in the city of Santa Paula.Businesses, students or parents who have questions or wish to participate in the Santa Paula Police Department Student Development Program may contact School Resource Officer Rich Randolph at 525-4406 ext. 179, or e-mail rrandolph@spuhsd/.k12.ca.us.
