Suicidal subject talked out of Colgate Street home early on Christmas Eve

Santa Paula police and fire personnel found themselves on scene of a potentially tragic incident early Christmas Eve when a suicidal man with a gun refused to come out of his Colgate Street home.

The man finally emerged after several hours and was taken into protective custody.The incident started at 7:13 a.m. when the SPPD was notified of a “suicidal subject, possibly armed, in the 300 block of Colgate Street,” said Sgt. Gary Marshall.Officers responded to the scene and called for additional assistance. The SPPD Special Response Team, SPPD Crisis Negotiation and Ventura County Mental Health personnel responded to the scene. The surrounding streets were blocked off and nearby residents were told to stay indoors.“After evaluating the situation, the Ventura County Sheriff’s helicopter was requested to standby,” in the event a medical evacuation was necessary.The air unit landed on the helicopter pad at Santa Paula Memorial Hospital.
After unsuccessfully attempting to make contact with the suicidal man by telephone, the SPPD Special Response Team used a bullhorn to call the subject out of the house, said Sgt. Marshall.The standoff had lasted for several hours when the man came out of the house. He was taken into protective custody without incident and transferred to Ventura County Mental Health for a 72-hour evaluation.“No officers or other persons were injured during the incident,” noted Sgt. Marshall.A rifle and handgun were taken from the residence for safekeeping, he added.There was no one else inside the residence during the standoff.
