Man wanted for questioning in Gutierrez murder arrested

A 48-year-old Ventura man sought for questioning in the May shooting death of a former Santa Paula resident has been arrested on suspicion of giving false information to a police officer and violating parole.

By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA 48-year-old Ventura man sought for questioning in the May shooting death of a former Santa Paula resident has been arrested on suspicion of giving false information to a police officer and violating parole.Stanley Louis Speer had been sought for questioning in the May shooting death of Vincent David Gutierrez, 24, of Ventura, a Santa Paula High School graduate, who was shot once in the chest at an abandoned rock quarry in an unincorporated area of west Ventura.Ventura County Sheriff’s investigators had been tightlipped about the murder of Gutierrez, who was shot May 20. His body was found by a woman that witnesses reported drove to the end of Rocklite Road in the quarry area, parked and scrambled up a hillside screaming Gutierrez’s name. Speer had been working on a construction site near Gutierrez’s Ventura home, close to where the shooting occurred.Within hours of the murder, SWAT unit officers stormed Speer’s Ventura house but were unable to locate him.
Since the murder Gutierrez’s stepfather, Johnny Alamillo, had been searching for Speer, who had seen working in the neighborhood before the murder.Speer was taken into custody Friday shortly before 5 p.m. after a VCSD deputy spotted him riding in a vehicle traveling on Harrison Avenue in Ventura.Bail for Speer set at $2,500 but he is not permitted out of custody due to the charge of violating parole.A transient, Jim Frank Martinez, 45, the driver of the vehicle in which Speer was a passenger, was also arrested Friday. He is being held on $10,000 bail on charges of concealing, avoiding or escaping arrest.
