GMSP! Teacher Birky, public worker Ferguson honored by chamber

An outstanding teacher and a city employee who received the first of a new award were honored at the April meeting of Good Morning Santa Paula! Hayward Baker, which specializes in ground modification solutions, hosted the chamber-sponsored event.

Hayward Baker, which specializes in ground modification solutions, hosted the chamber-sponsored event.Glen City School Principal Norah Byrom presented the Teacher of the Month Award to Monica Birky, a Santa Paula native.Byrom noted that Birky has relatives who have worked in the elementary school district as health assistants.Birky left her job as a judicial assistant to become a substitute teacher and now is in her fifth year teaching third grade.“Monica is an excellent teacher who has developed standards and lessons,” including the creation of a Santa Paula history program utilizing the city murals and museums. “The students have a new appreciation of their city,” due to the course, said Byrom.Birky, married to Mike and the mother of daughter Caitlin, is admired for her strategies for personalized instruction and student study options.“Monica is fair, caring, considerate, responsive and respectful; she’s always there when something has to be done,” including chairing the committee that ensures special events are remembered and celebrated. “She loves teaching and is a true professional,” Byrom noted.
Birky noted that Byrom has a much-admired open-door policy, and “I’m very honored and touched by this appreciation. So many of my colleagues are as hardworking and dedicated as I am; we want the best for our kids. I love Santa Paula, it’s a beautiful town and a wonderful city.”The new Public Employee of the Quarter Award was kicked-off with honors for Public Works employee Joe Ferguson.Interim Public Works Director Joe Lopez said Ferguson, who works for the city’s street division, has done a “marvelous job” especially during challenging times of high winds and storms.“It’s a pleasure to work with Joe and I want to thank him for all his fine work,” noted Lopez.“I want to tell all the people of Santa Paula that the city employees do appreciate our jobs,” said Ferguson. “I work for you,” as do other public works employees who have seen changing times in recent years. “There are a lot of great people working for Santa Paula,” where Ferguson has lived for 15 years. “It’s a great town and I appreciate the efforts of groups like this that try to improve the city.”John Macik/Santa Paula Chevrolet sponsor the monthly chamber awards.
