Santa Paula High School (SPHS) Human Services Academy (HSA) students have had the good fortune to be a part of a powerful internship program at Santa Paula Memorial Hospital. This program, designed by Jill Gregory, HSA teacher, provides a quality internship with various departments at Santa Paula Memorial Hospital. These internships give students a chance to have hands-on experience in careers they are interested in pursuing. The hospital staff is extremely supportive to the HSA students.

The hospital staff is extremely supportive to the HSA students.Michael Suniga, an HSA junior, did an internship at the hospital in surgery, recovery and the GI lab. According to Suniga, “This was a great experience; it offered me an opportunity to get insight into the actual procedures.” He is planning on pursuing a career as a physician and he finds the experience to be invaluable. Suniga got to take vital signs on patients, prepare patients for medical procedures, and assist in transporting patients. He says, “Doctors are very supportive; they take time to point out key issues.”Liliana Tobias is also a junior doing an internship at the hospital. She got the opportunity to work in X-rays. Liliana explains, “It was a very hands-on experience; I had the opportunity to develop film, stamp patients’ names on the X-rays, and review the film with the technologists.” The experience allows these students to really see the inside workings of a hospital. Tobias also got to be involved in other procedures to prepare X-rays.Danielle Bradley, also an HSA junior, did an internship in medical surgery. She says, “I like it, it is fun - a real hands-on experience. I learned a lot and got involved.” We are very fortunate at Santa Paula High School that this community extends itself to our students by providing a quality experience for them at the hospital.
Currently students are doing internships at Twin Pines. Audrey Dunham did her internship there and she learned a lot. She learned to administer different medications, how to use a syringe, and different medical technologies. “This is not something I want to do as a career, I want to be an OB-GYN doctor,” she said, “but I value this experience, my life feels blessed to help these patients.”The students learn and enjoy “real world experiences,” these experiences provide an opportunity for making intelligent choices in their education and careers that will impact the rest of their lives. We are very grateful for the support, time and energy that the staffs at Santa Paula Memorial Hospital and Twin Pines extend to our students. Without their support we could not have this academy. When the students return to our community as well trained professionals, they too will extend themselves to help make Santa Paula a great community to live in.
