A 19-year-old Santa Paula woman received a major head injury Wednesday after a westbound semi-truck on Highway 126 struck her.
The accident was reported at 6:08 p.m. as occurring near the Peck Road on- and off-ramps at Faulkner Road.
Santa Paula Police, Santa Paula Fire, Ventura County Fire and the California Highway Patrol responded to the scene where the truck driver had pulled over near the diamond area of the highway.
Witnesses said the woman, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, had been walking in and out of traffic when she darted out from the median; one vehicle was able to avoid hitting her but then the woman was struck by the semi-truck.
SPFD EMTs and ambulance paramedics treated the woman on scene before she was transported to Ventura County Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit.
CHP Officer Dave Webb said at first the identity of the woman - who suffered a major head injury - was unknown, as she was not found with any identification.
An unidentified person called the CHP and asked for more details of the accident and the victim and was able to identify the woman as a family member.
Her identification has not yet been released.
Officers diverted westbound traffic along Highway 126 to Peck Road for a time, but the lanes had reopened by 6:50 p.m.
The accident is still being investigated.
