Over 200 friends of the Santa Clara Valley Hospice were on hand Sunday for a grand open house at the new headquarters at the 1st United Methodist Church, an event billed as a heartfelt thank you to the community for its help. "It's been wonderful," said President of the SCVH Board of Directors Cathy Barringer, as she greeted supporters, led tours with other hospice volunteers and personnel, and urged that all sample the impressive buffet. The new SCVH offices offer a general meeting room, counseling area, storage area for the wide array of equipment loaned out for free (and whether or not the person needing to borrow anything from walkers to wheelchairs is affiliated with the hospice) and kitchen, among others. Shelves were filled with the special SCVH Library where books and videos - as well as cassettes - are also available to take out for free.Santa Clara Valley Hospice provides physical, emotional and spiritual support for those with life-threatening illnesses and their families. In addition, SCVH also runs workshops and counseling for bereavement and cancer patients, among others. Services are also provided to children. Santa Clara Valley Hospice - which serves the communities of Santa Paula, Fillmore and Piru - is unique as it doesn't charge for any of its services and relies on an army of volunteers while maintaining a very small staff. The annex area of the historic 1st United Methodist Church - directly across the street from the Depot Park area - was transformed by friends and supporters of the SCVH who donated money, materials and labor to ready it for hospice. New paint and carpets, rewiring of the area, repairs and a lot of work transformed the unused annex into a show place, including a revolving art exhibit courtesy of the Santa Paula Society of the Arts.
"It was quite a job but a marvelous job," that drew an "astonishing amount of support," from the community, said Barringer. "We've very grateful but that's how people are, very generous, very caring and very supportive of Santa Clara Valley Hospice. . .our friends and supporters are just wonderful."
