By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesJust hours after Saturday funeral services ended for Santa Paula residents Alexandre “Alex” Rivera Galvan, 61, and his daughter, Carmen Marie Galvan-Hererra, 41, killed in a horrific head-on collision on May 8, the driver of the second vehicle was arrested for felony charges related to their deaths. In addition, Santa Paula Police investigators found that the suspect had been involved in a minor traffic accident in Oxnard just about 90 minutes before the fatal crash.Ilene Marie Holder, 21, of Santa Paula, was arrested by SPPD investigators at approximately 3 p.m. at VCMC on two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, said SPPD Sgt. Carlos Juarez.Toxicology testing showed that Holder was under the influence of a controlled substance and at fault for the accident. The extensive investigation - which included reconstruction of the collision, interviewing witnesses and examining physical evidence - revealed that Holder's Aerostar van had crossed over the center divider while she drove eastbound on Telegraph Road, striking the Ford Escort driven by Alex Galvan head-on.Holder had been a VCMC patient since the accident that occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on Telegraph Road at the intersection of Beckwith Road, and caused Telegraph Road closed for seven hours.Holder, who received a broken leg in the accident, was taken after her arrest to the Ventura County Jail medical ward; bail has been set at $100,000.
Holder had been at work the Tuesday morning of the accident at the Port Hueneme shipyards, said Sgt. Juarez when for an unrevealed reason she left the job: at about 9:15 a.m., Holder was involved in a “minor traffic collision, a fender bender,” in Oxnard, where a report was taken and Holder was cited for driving without proof of insurance.About 45 minutes later, Holder's van was observed weaving back and forth on Telegraph Road and she reportedly ran one car off the road just minutes before the head-on collision that killed Alex Galvan and his daughter, Carmen Galvan-Herrera, who both died in area hospitals shortly after arrival.Toxicology report results were received Friday but a VCMC physician would not release Holder, instead requesting she spend another night at the facility; a SPPD officer had to be posted outside the door of Holder's room before she could be formally taken into custody on Saturday.Funeral services were held Saturday for Alex Galvan and Carmen Galvan-Herrera, drawing hundreds of people to St. Sebastian Church; the large Galvan family is well-known in the community where Alex Galvan - he had 11 brothers and sisters as well as six children, including Carmen - had been a paid-call volunteer firefighter and active with the Knights of Columbus.Holder has had “police contact in the past,” said Sgt. Juarez, who is requesting that “anyone who might have observed Holder driving, observed her driving pattern before the collision, or anyone who saw the actual collision,” to call him at 933-4277, or the SPPD 525-4474.
