Cardinal varsity slams Santa Clara 24-16

The Santa Paula varsity took on a tough Santa Clara team Friday in a non-league contest, coming away with a 24-16 win.

The Saints scored first off a 78-yard run but the Cards answered a few minutes later when Esteban Magaña scored.  Some two minutes later the Cards got on the scoreboard again when Magaña hit the end zone.  The first quarter ended with Santa Paula up 14-7.

The only score in the second quarter was a field goal kick by Santa Paula’s Hector Ayala.

The Saints scored early in the third quarter and a field goal midway through the fourth quarter putting Santa Paula’s lead at 17-16.  Magaña came through a short time later with an 85 yard run for a TD, the final score of the game.

Magaña again led in rushing with 133 yards.  Quarterback Kameron Klien recorded 53 yards on the ground.  He completed eight passes for 91 yards.  Hayden McClain led in receiving for the Cards with three receptions for a total of 39 yards.  Steven Kohr and Leo Vasquez led in tackles with three apiece.  Magaña has two kickoff returns for 125 yards.

The win put Santa Paula’s overall record at 4-5 and their league record stands at 0-3.
