The Cardinal boys’ varsity basketball team has spent much of their Winter break playing in the Ventura Kiwanis Tournament at Ventura High School.

The Cards met up first with Hueneme High and came away with a 53-42 loss.  Juan Martinez hit for 13 points.  Santa Paula missed 19 lay-up attempts. Santa Paula lost their next game to Pacifica, 65-57.  Coach David Urias said, “We did not play well at all against Pacifica.”

He said they played better against Oak Park, even with the 65-34 loss.  Eduardo Jimenez had 13 points and 5 rebounds for Santa Paula.  The Cardinals were doing well against Santa Clara, but a bad third quarter set them back and they ended up losing 68-46.  Juan Martinez hit for 15 points.  Taylor Casas and Jimenez each had 10 points.  Kameron Klein recorded 4 rebounds.

The Cards played a close game against Malibu Wednesday, but lost 59-52.  Urias said they were tied 44-44 in the 4th but fell short in the end.

Santa Paula plays at home against Carpinteria next Tuesday, with the frosh starting at 4:00 p.m.  Next Friday Santa Paula will host Fillmore for the first Frontier League match-up of the season.
