Santa Paula took their home game to the Hueneme High School field Friday night, because of concerns over lingering smoke from the Guiberson fire. Playing on unfamiliar turf didn’t seem to phase the Cards as they won over Bishop Diego, 28-21. The varsity started things off with a touchdown by Ivan Ledesma. Quarterback Kameron Klein handed the ball off to Ledesma early in the first quarter. Ledesma ran down the sideline for 80 yards and a TD. With the extra point, the Cards took a 7-0 lead. Bishop Diego answered late in the quarter to tie the score.Midway through the second quarter Klein took the ball into the end zone from one yard out. Santa Paula was now ahead 14-7. A few minutes later Bishop recovered a Santa Paula fumble and again tied the game. Not to be outdone the Cards scored again with 14 seconds left in the half on a 3-yard rush by Moises Magana. Santa Paula’s final TD came about three minutes into the third quarter with a 1-yard push by Klein. Bishop managed another TD late in the quarter, but neither team scored again.Ledesma carried the ball for a total of 134 yards and caught 7 passes for 68 yards. Magana had 36 yards rushing and recorded passing carries of 45 yards. Klein ended up with 113 yards, completing 10 of 17.The JV scored their first TD of the season late in the third quarter, but that was it for the day. The young Cards are struggling to find their way and lost to Bishop Diego, 39-6.
Cardinal Coach Teohua Sanchez said he was pleased how the players reacted to the situation at hand. “They were focused and determined and did not allow the change of venue to affect their game,” he said. “We would have preferred to play in Santa Paula in front of our fans and community but we did what we thought was in the best interest of the players. Athletic Director Danny Guzman did a fabulous job with handing the situation.”Sanchez said that the players played hard for four quarters of game. “The offense started off great but sputtered at times and put the defense in some bad situations on Friday,” he added. “We have to eliminate our turnovers, we threw two interceptions and we lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown. Special Teams once again played well, Special Teams Coordinator Myke Montoya had an excellent game plan. The defense played well against a tough Bishop Diego offense.”The Cards take on Santa Clara Friday with the JV game at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30 p.m. Friday is Homecoming.
