The visiting Grant High Lancers, out of North Hollywood, got a big surprise Friday as the Cardinal varsity mauled the visitors 43-7. Quarterback Max Moreno was on fire as he scored three touchdowns and threw a TD pass. One of his TDs was a more than 80-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.“I am pleased with our style of play Friday night against an extremely athletic Grant football team,” said Coach Teohua Sanchez. “We finally were able to put an entire game together for the first time. We could very well have a record of 6-0; we have had 5 of our games decided by 8 points or less. Special Teams had their best game of the season; as we had a partial block punt, punt return for a TD, and kickoff return for TD. Defense played a great game against an explosive Grant offensive. We caused two turnovers; a snack cause fumble, and a 35-yard interception return for a TD. The offense played a great game as we scored on every possession during the first half. We are looking forward to league play and we preparing for a tough Villanova football team.”The Cardinals came together as a team from the start. Two minutes into play Brandon Dock recovered a fumble. A few minutes later Moreno tossed the ball to Mike Vera who scored the first TD of the game. About eight minutes into the first quarter, Matt Kohr intercepted a pass and ran the ball for another Santa Paula score. The quarter ended with the Cards ahead 13-0.Santa Paula came out in the second quarter just as strong as the first. About midway through the quarter Moreno went up the middle to score. Zach McClain returned a punt a few moments later, running 80-yards to score. Martin Pulido took the ball into the end zone for the two-point conversion. A Cardinal field goal as the quarter neared an end put the Cards ahead 30-0.
Santa Paula missed out on a score as the third quarter started after Anthony Murillo returned the kickoff because of a penalty. Midway through the quarter Moreno returned the ball more than 80 yards to score.Grant finally got on the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter. This win gives the Cards a 4-2 record going into Frontier League play Friday against Villanova, also 4-2. Varsity play starts at 7:30 p.m. at Jones Field.
