By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesIt will be smooth tunes, great vibes, unique art, and food “to go man go!” when Hot Summer Jazz & Art fills the historic downtown with al fresco diners enjoying a unique night on the town. Hot Summer Jazz & Art will be held Saturday, July 12 from 6 to 10 p.m. A portion of East Main Street will be closed for the party, centered at the South Paseo, 926 E. Main.Billed as “an evening of classical jazz in tandem with local art,” Hot Summer Jazz & Art is more. The not to be missed event is a free evening of entertainment, art browsing and the chance to “order out” from a variety of downtown area restaurants offering specials for al fresco dining.Sultry songster Toni Jannotta is the featured performer for the outdoors and under the stars concert, with the vintage architecture of historic East Main Street as the backdrop.Santa Paula Downtown Merchants Association President Debbie Johnson said that Hot Summer Jazz & Art offers a fun evening for those who live in the city, as well as those from throughout Ventura County who heard of the party and made a point to attend. “People really, really enjoyed last year’s Hot Summer Jazz & Art evenings... the music was fabulous, the artists who displayed their works were very pleased at the turnout,” and Johnson added that it was found that “Jazz and art and East Main Street are a perfect combination.”
At the Hot Summer Jazz & Art, “We encourage people to eat downtown” at restaurants that package food to go, which enables diners to sit outside - at linen covered tables with umbrellas funded by the SPDMA - and enjoy the music. Fine art and crafts are available from notable artists, who last year said the event definitely helped to boost Santa Paula’s reputation as an art haven.Johnson said that various shops and salons are luring more people downtown, Cruise Nite and First Sunday at the Airport have provided the opportunity for joint marketing, and residents especially should learn to appreciate their own unique business district. “People who attended last year’s events were really impressed with the venue, the music, the art and the restaurants... everyone said they were having a wonderful time, and encouraged us to bring Hot Summer Jazz & Art back this summer.”So popular was the initial Hot Summer Jazz & Art that the band played an extra hour or so when the crowd didn’t disperse: the delighted SPDTMA promptly extended the hours. Also delighted were the restaurants and merchants that stayed open late to accommodate the crowd, who enjoyed their dinners at round tables for easy visiting, pub tables for loftier tastes, and the approximately 24 art exhibit tents spread near the bandstand outside the South Paseo.“It’s an exciting event where people run into friends they hadn’t seen in awhile and meet new people” in an atmosphere, said Johnson, chock full of fun, hot jazz, fine art and delicious dining.
