By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesAlthough noted for productions that set the stage afire, the Santa Paula Theater Center is getting closer to keeping the real thing from happening after the City Council approved plans and specifications to bring the building up to fire code. The Council approved the plans and specifications for the fire sprinkler project at the April 21 meeting.City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz noted that the Council had directed him in November to meet with the SPTC Board of Directors to explore funding opportunities. “Since then, with direction from the Council Fire Chief Rick Araiza,” I have continued to work with the SPTC Board and system designers on the now completed schematic.“When we have the cost,” the Council will be approached with an agreement between the SPTC and the city “on how to move forward” with the project.“I saw those plans in the Council office,” and Councilman Ray Luna said he had concerns about the progress of the project.
Discussions continue to identify funding sources, and “I look to the Redevelopment Agency to play a big role in this,” said Bobkiewicz.“RDA, is that a gift?” asked Mayor Bob Gonzales.“That’s what we are working on,” noted Bobkiewicz. “Needless to say, we would craft an agreement that makes sense for RDA and the city.”According to the report by Interim Public Works Director Jon Turner, “Because the building is considered to be a community asset” there has been heavy city involvement in the project. “Once the bids are received, staff will return to the Council with the proposed construction cost” and recommendation. “In addition,” noted Turner’s report, “the owner of the building will need to grant an easement for the proposed construction to occur.”
