Ayala and Dominguez fled but Ayala collapsed in the 100 block of North Olive Street, approximately 100 yards from the crime scene.Sgt. Cordero said that investigators early on had “an idea that the partner might have shot the victim accidently…”Ayala, who was shot once in each shoulder and once in the back, the latter bullet exiting through his stomach, is listed as in stable but critical condition, said Sgt. Cordero. On Monday a search of Dominguez’s residence was conducted and he was taken to the Santa Paula Police Station and interviewed about the incident. After the interview Dominguez was arrested and booked into Ventura County Jail and charged with attempted homicide, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, negligent discharge of a firearm and attempted robbery.Sgt. Cordero said he does not believe that the intended victims knew the suspects, who have had contact before with the SPPD and are “subjects we are familiar with.”What led them to the apartment has not been determined: “I’m thinking they were after cash, but I’m not sure what led them to that apartment and the belief that the residents would have money,” Sgt. Cordero noted. The weapon used in the shooting, a 9 mm handgun, has not yet been recovered.“The suspect may have disposed of that weapon somewhere along the route” as they ran from the scene said Sgt. Cordero. “If that happened we don’t want a young kid handling that weapon and having an accident.”Ayala remains hospitalized and has not yet been charged and the investigation is continuing. If anyone has any information regarding this incident – including the location of the weapon - Sgt. Cordero is asking that they contact the SPPD at 525-4475 or the Ventura County Crime Stoppers hotline, 524-0907.

Ish Cordero said the incident was reported at approximately 8:51 p.m. on April 29 when the SPPD received a call of shots fired with one gunshot victim in the 100 block of North Olive Street.“Upon arrival Officers located the victim,” identified as Gregory Ayala, 24 of Santa Paula, “suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body and back.”Santa Paula Fire EMTs and ambulance paramedics stabilized Ayala at the scene before he was transported to Ventura County Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery.SPPD closed the area of Olive Street, Palm Avenue and Santa Barbara Street during the investigation which led to a Santa Barbara Street apartment complex where witness statements and evidence revealed that the shooting had taken place.“When we arrived on the scene of the shooting victim we quickly tried to get information from people in the area who had seen the subject running,” and traced his movements back to the apartment complex where investigators found casings in the driveway area.Sgt. Cordero said three adults and an infant were inside the apartment when the gunfire broke out and a “bullet landed on the mattress where the baby was.”
