Ventura man shot early Sunday outside E. Ventura Street residence

A Ventura man received a single gunshot wound early Sunday after he was targeted outside a house on the 1000 block of East Ventura Street but the victim and witnesses are telling law enforcement they have no information on the incident, according to a Santa Paula Police spokesman.

Michael Saviers.SPPD Officers were dispatched to Ventura Street after a report of shots fired and a man down.“Upon the arrival of officers the victim was found inside a vehicle being readied for transport to a hospital by friends,” noted Sgt. Saviers.There was no evidence of confrontation occurring before the shooting, according to Senior Officer Cody Madison who said that “there were no calls for a disturbance ahead of time…we just received a call of shots fired” outside the house, located near the intersection at South 11th Street.Santa Paula Fire EMTs and AMR Ambulance paramedics treated the victim, John Julian Lopez, 33 of Ventura, on scene before transporting him to Santa Paula Hospital. “It appears that the victim was at a gathering,” and was outside the residence near the street when he was struck by a single gunshot.
Lopez, who received a bullet wound to the abdomen area, had to undergo emergency surgery for the removal of the bullet and possible internal injuries.Sgt. Saviers noted that “No one contacted at the scene, nor the victim, was able to provide information about the shooting.”Senior Officer Madison said that it is unknown if the shooting was somehow gang-related or random: “We have no idea at this point. No one wants to say anything…and the victim was uncooperative also.”When an act of violence is gang-related it is common for witnesses and/or the victim to refuse to cooperate with police.The investigation into the shooting by SPPD detectives in ongoing.Anyone with information should call the SPPD at 525-4474 or the SPPD recorded Tip Hotline at 933-4253-1-#.
