By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesA malfunctioning transformer put up to two dozen Lemonwood Industrial Park businesses out of business Wednesday, due to an electrical power failure, according to a Southern California Edison spokeswoman. The power outage occurred at about 7 a.m. on August 8, according to Nancy Williams, SCE region manager.Although SCE customers affected by the outage were told that power would not be restored until the mid-evening hours, “We had the load back up by 2:15 p.m.,” Williams noted. Various businesses in Lemonwood Industrial Park - including Santa Paula Ford and the Shell gasoline station - were affected by the power outage. Lemonwood Industrial Park is located north of Highway 126 at Hallock Drive and ranges to the west.
Williams said that the cause of the electrical transformer malfunction is unknown at this time. “It could be any of a number of reasons,” she noted. “We hardly ever have outages in the area, so something might have impacted that transformer... or it just wore out.”The outage was confined to the Lemonwood Industrial Park neighborhood. “It affected 20 to 25 customers in the park; it was not a widespread area” that had the electrical blackout, noted Williams. The Santa Clara River Valley, as well as the state, suffered through a recent record heat wave that created at times triple-digit temperatures - Woodland Hills in the San Fernando Valley hit an astonishing 114 degrees - that dragged on for more than three weeks and strained power supplies. More than 140 state residents died from heat-related causes, but cooler Ventura County did not report any fatalities.
