The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) today announced the Los Angeles District Office winners of their annual Small Business Week Awards competition. The Los Angeles SBA Office covers Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. Santa Paula, CA based Mendez Concrete, Inc. was selected as the 2005 SBA Family- Owned Small Business of the Year. The Award will be presented to brothers and third generation cement masons Manuel and Jack Mendez at the SBA’s 24th Annual Small Business Week Awards Luncheon to be held from 11:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. on Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The luncheon will be presented by the SBA and the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. SBA Administrator Hector Barreto will make the keynote address to the honorees and 800 supporters of small business.Mendez Concrete represents the essence of the quintessential American family-owned enterprise. It has been a mainstay in the Ventura County construction industry for almost three decades. Among its growing roster of employees are three generations of Mendez family members perpetuating the business, in addition to maintaining and growing valuable business relationships and associations with a varied array of community organizations. The Mendez Brothers take pride in the excellent work environment and benefits they provide to their 20 full time employees. They are also proud of the fact that as Mendez Concrete continues to grow it will create additional job opportunities that members of the Union Local can fill. They feel that their community will thus benefit from the increased disposable income which will be plowed back into the community in exchange for local goods and services. Finally, as a family owned enterprise, and one whose principals volunteer significant time and contribute financial resources to the community, they feel it apropos that, whenever possible, they contract business with other locally-based and family-owned and operated suppliers.
Los Angeles SBA District Director Alberto G. Alvarado praised the Mendez Family, stating, “Manual and Jack epitomize the meaning of what this award stands for. They have nurtured a fertile environment in which their company, employees, suppliers, and all stake holders have prospered. As entrepreneurs, they successfully managed the company in a creative yet conservative manner and were able to weather economic down turns and to take advantage of building and construction booms. As patriarchs Manuel and Jack have had the vision and stick-to-it-ness to persevere and reap the rewards of their investment in time and resources. In turn they have translated their efforts into a legacy for the entire Mendez Family. At the end of the day, they have created and championed an enterprise that is worthy of being selected the SBA Family-owned Business of the Year.”
