By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesSanta Paula Police had to activate the Special Response Team (SRT) Sunday evening, after a call of “suspicious circumstances” at a North Steckel Drive residence led to a wild chase and the arrest of six men, including two that tried to hide inside the residence.SPPD Sergeant Ryan Smith said the November 2 incident was reported at about 8 p.m., when police received a call of “suspicious circumstances in the 400 block of North Steckel Drive” at a single-family residence north of Richard Road. “A neighbor reported that the owner of the residence was not at home, however” the caller said he saw people inside the home.Upon arrival, officers checked the location and several men ran from the residence. An officer “immediately recognized one of the subjects as David Lee Castro,” 24, of Santa Paula, who the officer knew was “wanted by state parole and considered armed and dangerous.”As the officer attempted to stop him, Smith said Castro continued to flee on foot, at one point falling into the swimming pool located at the back of the residence. A SPPD K-9 apprehended Castro, who received minor injuries including dog bites as a result of the arrest. Castro, noted Smith, “also fractured his foot while fleeing from the officer.”Another subject spotted by police - wanted in connection with an unrelated incident - was believed to be hiding in the residence, and officers formed a perimeter and used a loudspeaker to order those remaining inside the residence to come out. Three additional men came out and were detained for further investigation, but “with a belief that a possible armed subject” was still inside, the SPPD Special Response Team was activated and responded to the scene. After several failed attempts to contact those inside the team entered, and Ryan said they discovered Manlio Escamilla, 31, and Michael Salazar, 29, both of Santa Paula, hiding in the residence. Escamilla had an outstanding state parole warrant for his arrest, and Salazar had a felony warrant and three misdemeanor warrants for his arrest.
