You’ve heard of a black-out, but the flip side of the term is Paint-Out, the annual Santa Paula Society of the Arts kick-off meeting of the season, to be held September 12th at The Mill. The society’s annual Paint-Out has been held in many scenic locations throughout the Santa Clara River Valley and other locales for SPSA artists to study and recreate, but this one promises to have the artists themselves on display, according to Betty McDonald.“There will be Fillmore & Western Railway train passengers who be delighted to see artists at work,” she noted, as well as the offering for the artists at the historic Mill.“What an opportunity! There are literally thousands and thousands of objects and scenes waiting to be captured,” at The Mill, she added. What an understatement: The Mill, formerly dedicated to mostly farming supplies and feed, has been transformed over the years to an anything goes place to shop for gifts, antiques and collectibles for both inside and outside (it has the marvelous Helen’s Garden shop). In addition, The Mill Gallery is a special spot reserved for SPSA members and art lovers who can enjoy as well as purchase the exhibited artworks. The Santa Paula Society of the Arts was founded in 1968 by a group of 23 prominent local artists who not only wished to maintain their friendships, but improve their artwork as well as encourage artistic growth, interest and art appreciation in all phases of the arts.
The society founders also vowed to offer annual scholarships and encouragement to talented students and encourage civic interest and cultural awareness of the arts. One of the most popular events staged by the society are its regular Demonstration Meetings open to the general public where a noted artist offers insights into their own creative process. . .and the artwork is then raffled off through take-a-chance ticket sales. For more information about the Santa Paula Society of the Arts, call 525-1104.
