By Peggy Kelly Santa Paula TimesSanta Paula Police arrested a Port Hueneme man on suspicion of parole violation after a short car pursuit on West Harvard Boulevard Monday afternoon, an incident that included two men who successfully fled on foot through a residential neighborhood, according to a SPPD spokesman.SPPD Senior Officer Ryan Smith said that the incident occurred at about 2:40 p.m. on March 26 when a SPPD Officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a minor traffic violation in the 300 block of West Harvard Boulevard. The driver refused to pull over and went about three blocks before slowing down on the 600 block of West Harvard Boulevard where two people jumped from the vehicle and took off on foot.Senior Officer Smith said that police already knew one of the men who fled from officers.“As the vehicle slowed” and let the subjects out, “an Officer immediately identified one of the subjects as David Lee Castro, 22 of Santa Paula,” who is on “active Ventura County Probation for charges related to narcotics and resisting arrest.”Alex Castro, 24 of Port Hueneme was arrested for a parole violation. The driver of the vehicle, Rachel Castro, 28 also of Port Hueneme, was detained at the scene and cited for evading a police officer, failure to maintain vehicle insurance and expired vehicle registration before she was released.
A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of several items related to the sales of narcotics as well as $500 in currency that was seized “believed to be related to the sales of narcotics,” noted Senior Officer Smith.SPPD Officers found electronic scales, a “glass methamphetamine pipe, and plastic Baggies used to package narcotics,” in a backpack left in the vehicle.“There were no actual narcotics found but on several occasions when David Lee Castro was apprehended in the past he has been in possession” of various drug related items including narcotics.“During this time SPPD received several reports that subjects were running through backyards in the area of the 200 block of Laurie Lane. Officers, including the SPPD K-9 Unit, searched the area” but were unable to locate the subjects.“It was later found that a vehicle that was traveling in the area picked up the subjects and transported them away from the scene,” Senior Officer Smith noted.Alex Castro was transported to Ventura County Jail where he was initially booked on a “no bail” parole warrant.
