The University of California’s Office of the President and Santa Paula High School, in partnership with University of California, Santa Barbara, offered the Summer Algebra Academy to our incoming freshman class. This intensive summer program prepares students for high school college prep mathematics. The Academy also prepares students for success in college, while providing them the opportunity to share in the University of California’s tradition of excellence and diversity. This is not a traditional summer school; this is a pilot program, which sets extremely high standards, both personal and academic. Students are challenged and prepared to succeed in high school in general, with a specific focus on completing the A-G college admissions requirements. Students must complete an application process prior to entering the Academy and, when accepted, they are required to attend all classes; absences and/or tardies may result in removal from the Academy. The ultimate goal of the Academy is for students to enroll in higher education immediately after high school graduation. Academic preparation, academic success and pertinent information about higher education are required to ensure college admissions; thus the program focuses on academic content, study skills and college exposure. Each student in the summer academy will take a challenging math course, a College Readiness Seminar, and visit a University of California campus. Additionally, parents are required to attend meetings throughout the summer and academic year to keep them informed about the Summer Algebra Academy and college admissions requirements.
The Summer Algebra Academy courses are taught by a team of 18 staff members, which includes four academic teachers, two counselors, two intern-counselors, three UCSB MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) mentors, four tutors, and three teacher assistants. Also present on campus are Bob Cota, UCSB director of engineering enrichment programs, and Phyllis Brady, UCSB assistant director of engineering enrichment programs. In celebration of the completion of the Summer Algebra Academy, parents and students attended the end-of-Academy ceremony on July 27, where students were to prepare individual PowerPoint presentations on valuable information learned through the Academy.
