Reola Hyde Lavelle Reola Hyde Lavelle, 84, of Camarillo, was called to heaven by our Lord on Monday, February 9, 2004 following a heart attack.Reola was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Santa Paula. Besides often serving as the lay leader for Sunday worship services, she participated on numerous church committees and belonged to United Methodist Women, for which she served as president. In 1999, Reola was given the Laity Award.She belonged to P.E.O. since 1969, serving as corresponding secretary, chaplain, chair of many committees, and the president of the Santa Barbara chapter. She was also a member of Loyal Friends and Ebell Club.Reola was born on May 16, 1919 in Kintyre, ND, to Ben and Elfrieda Maland, both of Norwegian descent. She was the eldest of five children and learned responsibility early as she helped with the housework since Elfrieda was not well after giving birth to her fourth child. Reola remembered being poor but having a happy childhood with lots of relatives and friends. Social life revolved around the church, and Reola participated in many church programs.Reola’s father was a carpenter, and found little work during the North Dakota winters. His desire for his children to attend college led to the decision to move the family to California in 1936. Reola graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1937, and the family moved to Santa Paula the next day.Reola attended Ventura College and graduated from Santa Barbara State College in 1941. In July that year, she married Charles Hyde of Santa Paula. In the fall, Reola started teaching at Isbell Junior High School, which she did for 10 years. Reola raised her three children and managed their agricultural holdings after Charles’ sudden death in 1963.Reola was introduced to Dr. Patrick Lavelle by a mutual friend. Pat and Ginger, as Pat called her, shared a common interest in the theater and travel, and were married in Kailua, Hawaii in 1979.Reola had a passion for the theater and travel. Her favorite playwright was William Shakespeare, and she could provide a quote for almost any occasion. Reola had traveled worldwide, and achieved a lifelong dream last summer by taking an Alaskan cruise with her children and their families.Reola is survived by husband Pat; son and daughter-in-law Steve and Diane Hyde of Glendora; son and daughter-in-law Brent and Lourie Hyde of Santa Paula; daughter and son-in-law Cindy and Gary Wilson of Camarillo; grandson Charles Hyde and his wife Karen of Rancho Cucamonga; grandchildren Lisa and Julie Hyde of Glendora, and Tyler and Nicole Wilson of Camarillo; great grandson Brenson Hyde of Rancho Cucamonga; brother Al Maland of La Mirage, CA; sister Ruby Stenshol of Camarillo; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and many cherished friends.
Reola will be remembered as a leader in her church, an avid world traveler, a knowledgeable theater enthusiast, and the proud matriarch of her family, a loving and generous mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She epitomized her favorite quote from Shakespeare, “This above all: to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.”A viewing will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 13 at Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura, 643-9977. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 14 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Santa Paula, 133 N. Mill St., Santa Paula, 525-2214, with a reception in the church’s Wesley Hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Reola’s memory to the First United Methodist Church of Santa Paula.Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura.Susan BoedeckerSusan Boedecker, age 42, a native of Yuma, Arizona, passed quietly away at Ochsner’s Foundation Clinic on Friday, 6 February 2004. Susan, an Episcopalian by faith, grew up in Santa Paula, California. She graduated from Santa Paula High School. She will rest with her mother Nancy, father Robert, and brother Patrick who proceeded her in death. She is survived by her devoted husband of 23 years, Willard (Boe) Boedecker and her beloved pets Judy, Marina, Chelsea, Ruger, Scampy, Velvet, Attila, Mouchee, Babette, and Elvira. Susie also leaves a host of friends who will miss her dearly. Susie was a kind friend to all animals and is remembered for adopting or finding homes for many strays cats and dogs.In memory of Susie’s fondness for pets and in lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to: The Old Ladies Fund, B. A. M. C., 1524 Hwy 90 East, Ocean Springs, MS 39564 (an organization to benefit injured animals). Close friends will attend a private wake in her memory.
