Young Writer Contest draws 1,000 entries
Pat Alderson, former Santa Paula Elementary School District librarian, in cooperation with the school district’s libraries, sponsored the 22nd annual Young Writer’s Contest. Each year the contest entries grow, and this year, more than 1,000 entries from students in grades 1-8 were distributed to the judges. The winning students were honored at the Awards dinner at Isbell Middle School on May 16, sponsored by the Santa Paula Federation of Teachers.Judges for the popular contest were Penny Sjolund, Beverly Mueller, Ilene Gavenmann, Daniel Robles, all through the Blanchard Library; Eugene Marzec, Roseanne Mears, Chris Buchanan, retired teachers; Lupe Castro, SPESD Migrant Services, Chris Solarez, Isbell Counselor, Cheryl Philips, Isbell teacher, Celia Ward, Santa Paula High School librarian, Linda Derbyshire, published poet, and Teri Rhodehamel, published poet and editor/publisher of Wild Coma, a collection of works by Ventura County poets.Students write about their pets, families, friends, memories, feelings, nature, sports, ghosts, and aliens. They write mysteries, fantasies, and fairy tales, humorous tales, and adventure. This year, many of the poems related to the September 11 tragedy.Isbell Middle School had the most winners with 25 from grades sixth through eighth.
