By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesApril is right around the corner as is the kickoff to the Santa Paula centennial celebration for the 100 birthday of the Glen City. The City Council was updated on centennial celebration plans at the Oct. 15 meeting.Community Services Director Brian Yanez said the committee has been meeting every other week. “They have a short time to do this,” and meet the April kickoff, Yanez noted, but “they’ve been working very hard and have come up with some ideas.”The council several months ago discussed the centennial celebration and each council member selected a committee member: Gabino Aguirre, Jim Garfield, Bill Glenn, Gabie Araiza-Reeves and Mike Kerr are overseeing the effort.Garfield said the committee has not only been discussing celebration events but what it should accomplish in bringing the community together and imbuing a sense of pride and purpose, among other goals.Aguirre arranged a committee meeting with the educational community to garner support for student projects to “delve into the history of Santa Paula; all service clubs and groups” are also being asked to participate and community input is being garnered. The centennial will be “Broken down into three groups,” Garfield added, celebrating the centennial; the city’s past, which will feature museum exhibits and recreations of newspapers circa 1902; and the “future and preparing its groundwork.”
Garfield noted he sees the committee as the “clearing house for events but community will guide,” the celebration, which will likely include the Santa Paula Theater Center and Santa Paula Airport.Once the budget is “Well thought out and put together,” it will be brought to the council, added Garfield. “It’s an ambitious project, but after all this is the city’s celebration.”Councilwoman Laura Flores Espinosa asked the timeframe of the celebration events and Garfield said they will occur from April through September.“The kick off will be the big event but we’re looking at bookend events, April and then September to conclude the celebration. We have 100 ideas for our 100th anniversary celebration.”Councilman John Procter noted that the city “appropriated a very low amount of money,” $5,000, to get the centennial celebration off the ground.“Oh, trust me,” more funds will be requested, said Garfield.“We had to throw out some kind of figure,” said Procter, and Mayor Don Johnson noted the $5,000 is “not even close,“ to covering costs.
