What each of us does in our homes, schools, and offices, and what we do together as communities and as a state, will determine whether California’s next major earthquake will be a natural disaster (from which we can recover quickly), or a major catastrophe that will affect our way of life for many years.The Great California ShakeOut on October 15th at 10:15 is about more than just practicing “Drop, Cover and Hold On”. It’s about getting us all to talk about earthquakes, think about preparedness, and to act now. Plan to participate in the nations largest Earthquke drill and talk to your neighbors, family, colleagues, or others and encourage them to be a part of the ShakeOut. Participants are asked to go online and register by visiting the website at www.ShakeOut.org People participating and getting prepared may possibly help them survive a major earthquake.As of today more than 5.6 million Californians are registered to participate in the ShakeOut drill at 10:15 a.m. on October 15. Use the interactive map on the www.ShakeOut.org home page to see how many participants are in our area. The 2009 ShakeOut is now officially larger than the 2008 ShakeOut, and there are still 15 days left! With two weeks still to go, many more can still register!
In addition to participating in the Duck, Cover and Hold On drill everyone should be Ready for emergencies by following the Ready Campaign’s three simple steps: 1) Get an emergency supply kit; 2) Make a family emergency plan; and 3) Be informed about the types of emergencies that can happen in your area and their appropriate responses.By taking these three steps - in particular having an emergency supply kit both at home and in the car - Americans will be prepared for winter mainstays like power outages and icy roads. Each of these kits should include basic necessities such as water, food and first aid supplies to help you survive if you are without power or become stranded in your vehicle.
