By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesThey both are natives of Santa Paula and found themselves drawn to protecting the public: and now the brothers Macias are serving citizens in the public safety field, one as a police officer and the other as a paid-call volunteer firefighter.Alan Macias, a 1990 graduate of Santa Paula High School, is now a Santa Paula Police Officer, joining the city in April. Alan had been a SPPD Police Cadet for a number of years before going off to get his higher education and then returning to the force. After he graduated from the Sheriff’s Academy, “Alan decided he wanted to come back to his hometown to serve,” said Chief Bob Gonzales.By the time Alan became a SPPD officer, Austin Macias had already been working in his hometown as a paid-call volunteer for the Santa Paula Fire Department.A 1995 Santa Paula High School graduate, Austin was hired in November 1996, said Chief Paul Skeels.“Austin is an assistant engineer and also served in the past as an acting engineer. . .he’s a very capable young man, very dependable.”Joining the fire department was “just to do something to serve my community and something I liked to do,” said Austin.
Now working for Automotive Racing Products, Austin said he would eventually like to become a full-time firefighter, “hopefully for the city of Santa Paula.”Being a SPFD paid-call volunteer, has been a “great experience so far; I’ve learned a lot and it’s pretty cool to go on calls and see Alan there doing what we’re doing.”Alan Macias always wanted to go into law enforcement: “I’d always been interested, I always liked,” the idea of making it a career. “To be a policeman in Santa Paula was always a goal of mine.”Councilman Rick Cook, who retired from the SPPD, said that he has known Alan “since he was a kid. . .he’s a real fine addition,” to the police department. It was two years after he graduated from SPHS that Alan became a Police Cadet; like Austin, he attended Ventura College but unlike his younger brother he took the law enforcement path of public safety service.Alan said Santa Paula has “grown, but other than that it’s the same,” and he is enjoying the community interactions of his work.Eventually, he would like to become a K-9 Officer, working patrol with a dog partner.“I was born and raised in Santa Paula, and it’s a privilege and an honor to come back and serve my community,” he noted.
