What is the Teague Mansion? In the past it was Santa Paula’s Castle on the Hill. Completed in 1923, this was the second home of the Charles Collins Teague family. As the second residence to be built on this hillside, the stately home was carefully situated to take advantage of the sweeping views of the valley and distant Pacific Ocean. Designed by Roy Wilson in collaboration with Edwin Thorne and designer Peter Ficker, the style was called Old English Manor House. Every room has a view, inside and out. The artworks of Jackie Hamilton’s mother, Jan Wagner, are displayed throughout the house. A portrait of Robert Wagner (1914-1922), founder of the Los Angeles Master Chorale, hangs in the library along with a photograph of him with Pope Pius XII. The painted ceiling in the library depicts the Four Seasons, and was painted by Timothy Townsley, a professor at UCLA.You may see another beautiful mural in the elevator, as well as a telephone for emergencies. The breakfast room and kitchen have bright blue tile and colorful wallpaper. Farm scenes are painted on the island cabinet doors. The spacious dining room table was purchased from the previous owners.A baby grand piano highlights one end of the large living room. The large couches frame a coffee table and provide comfortable seating for any size crowd. On the landing, the Hamiltons have positioned a great mirror to reflect the view of the house. The upstairs is furnished with four-poster beds, antique dressers, armoires, and beautiful linens. Jackie has turned the sewing room into her special memory room. The men’s wing includes a bath, office, guest room and bedroom. Jackie’s favorite room in the guest suite is the bedroom that overlooks the formal English garden. In the distance you may see the Santa Paula Airport and the Old Fellows clock tower.
