Services for Fillmore Fire Chief Rigo Landeros were held Tuesday, a somber gathering that drew hundreds of first responders and officials from throughout Ventura County.

Landeros, 51, died unexpectedly January 7 in Bardsdale.

“I was at the funeral service for Chief Rigo Landeros,” Santa Paula City Manager Jaime Fontes said during the communications portion of Tuesday’s meeting.

Landeros, he noted, “Was a former Fillmore City Manager,” who was accorded a “Very dignified and proper ceremony…all public safety responders were there and many elected officials.

“Liked by everyone that met him,” Fontes said Landeros was a “modest man…the service provided a great deal of comfort to his family.”

“Thank you to all our first responders,” said Mayor Martin Hernandez. “There was a great contingent of public service today for Chief Landeros,” whom Hernandez said was “an amazing fire chief, father, grandfather, husband, son and good friend…”

Later the City Council meeting was adjourned in Landeros’ honor.

Landeros, a Fillmore native, started with the Fillmore Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter in 1998 and was appointed Fire Chief in May 2009.

He also served Fillmore as interim city manager and was presently the assistant city manager and acting public works director. A former butcher, Landeros later became an executive for Gelson’s, a boutique market chain.

His wife Laura, four children and two grandchildren survive Landeros.
