Last Tuesday featured an Anti-Bullying assembly. ASA brought in five of the world’s top professional skateboarders, inline skaters and BMX riders from the X Games to perform on a state-of-the-art half-pipe, while an emcee delivered an educational message in a fun, positive and interactive fashion.

Every day last week students at Santa Paula High School were participating in fun activities where they learned how to manage stress.

After attending the Ronald Reagan Leadership Program, where each student was encouraged to plan and execute a community service project, Nicole Mayes was inspired to create “Stress Less Week” at Santa Paula High School.  Nicole assembled an ASB committee, including herself, Daisy Candelas, Tina Chavez, and Isabel Payne to help organize the week’s events in an effort to raise consciousness about teen stress.  Nicole shared, “I have firsthand experience with being an overly-stressed teenager. I know, however, that stress is a constant force in all of our lives. My problem was that we have never really been taught how to manage it. So, I wanted to bring some fun activities to the students at Santa Paula High School in an attempt to teach them just that.”

The week’s activities included keynote speaker Robert Chaparro who addressed “Self-Care, Self-Esteem, and Stress Management” during a Monday morning assembly. Tuesday featured an Anti-Bullying assembly. It was a collaborative effort of the X Games, United States Marines, and the Anti-Defamation League. The ASA High School Tour, a high-energy action sports circuit that visits cities across the United States supporting the Anti-Defamation League’s No Place for Hate campaign and the campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, set up on the baseball field.  ASA brought in five of the world’s top professional skateboarders, inline skaters and BMX riders from the X Games to perform on a state-of-the-art half-pipe, while an emcee delivered an educational message in a fun, positive and interactive fashion.  Students could win prizes, get autographs and participate in a variety of contests.

Wednesday was “Random act of kindness day”, where uplifting compliment cards tied to individual flowers were distributed during nutrition and lunch. Thursday, there was yoga at lunch with Vanessa White, and Friday, a bunny petting zoo came to the high school’s Center Courts.

The students on the committee felt stress was an important issue at the high school that needed to be addressed amongst their peers.  Tina Chavez stated, “I think these activities are a good way to teach students how to manage stress, especially with finals week approaching. The random act of kindness day, especially, is a good way of helping everyone stay positive.”
