Just before Spring Break, the Santa Paula High School auditorium was filled with friends and family as various school musical groups performed for the All District Spring Concert.

The Santa Paula Unified School District Superintendent, Alfonso Gamino welcomed everyone to the event. He said the school district was very focused on making sure that music education is alive and well in our schools.

The evening started out with pre-concert music provided by the Santa Paula High School Jazz Band. That was followed by several songs performed by the Isbell Middle School Chorus, followed by the SPHS Choral Group.

Next to take the stage was the 5th Grade Advanced Band, followed by the Isbell band and finally the SPHS Concert Band. The evening was concluded with a performance by all the choral groups and the three bands.

Asurprise announcement came after the final song. Superintendent Gamino announced that SPHS Band Director Doug Kadansky was retiring at the end of the school year. “I couldn’t let him go without acknowledging his hard work,” Gamino said. He shared his first meeting with Kadansky when he came on as superintendent. He showed him the poor quality instruments they had to use and told Gamino, “We need better instruments.” New instruments did come and Gamino said, “I know that after this year what you have built here will continue.”

Kadansky told the crowd that his best experience has been the last 10 years at Santa Paula High School. He credited the parent and student involvement for that.

A surprise announcement came after the final song. It was announced that SPHS Band Director Doug Kadansky was retiring at the end of the school year.
