William Scott Hedrick
William “Scott” Hedrick passed away peacefully on November 3, 2013, after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. He was 68. Scott was surrounded by family and close friends during this difficult time and supported by the outstanding medical teams at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara and Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles.
Scott was a fourth generation member of a California family well known in Santa Paula and the neighboring Simi Valley for their citrus properties and community involvement. His grandfather, Benjamin Hedrick, was a founder of Citizens State Bank of Santa Paula and was the mayor of Santa Paula in 1939. Scott was born in Los Angeles, California, on September 23, 1945, to Sanger and Betty Hedrick and went to local public schools before attending Menlo College and UCSB. He was a medic in the US Air Force Reserves and completed his post graduate work at the USC School of Business in 1970.
Scott began his professional career with the Bank of America’s Small Business Enterprise Company. In 1974, he became a partner in American-Euro Interfund, and in 1979 he co-founded InterWest Partners, a highly regarded, diversified venture capital firm.
Scott helped guide numerous small business enterprises from concept to successful, publicly traded companies. He served as a director for many of them, including the Office Club, Office Depot, Il Fornaio, Tetra Technologies, Golden State Vintners, Hot Topic, Noodles & Company, Vintage Wine Trust, and the Capital Group Companies. He was on the Board of Directors of the National Venture Capital Association and was a lecturer at the graduate schools of business at Stanford University, Pepperdine University, and the University of Oregon. Beyond being a successful businessman, educator, and mentor, he was always acknowledged for his exemplary ethics and his sense of fair play.
Scott also served on the boards of the William H. Adams Foundation, which funds amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) basic research, and Direct Relief International, a non-profit that provides essential medical supplies and equipment to people around the world who have been affected by poverty, natural disasters, and civil unrest.
Scott was an avid outdoorsman. His competitive spirit and close friendships found him fly-fishing the great rivers of Argentina, Chile, New Zealand, Idaho, and Montana, as well as the mighty McCloud River in Northern California. Scott thrived on the camaraderie and competition of golf. He was a proud member of the San Francisco Golf Club, the Valley Club of Montecito, and the Stock Farm Club in Hamilton, Montana. As a player, he excelled and was a sought after partner in countless member-guest tournaments.
Scott will be best remembered for his love of family and friends and as a generous and kind man who readily shared his many gifts. Among his greatest joys were time with family, friends and puppies at Lake Tahoe, walking his dogs along the beaches of Santa Barbara, and cruising around Lake Tahoe in his vintage wooden boat. A masterful storyteller, he enjoyed sharing his well-known sense of humor, especially with his cherished grandchildren. His sense of fairness and ability to touch the lives of others in a profound and meaningful way were hallmarks of his character.
Scott was the consummate “people person.” He loved to socialize and always had an easy smile, a twinkle in his eye, an infectious laugh, and a wonderfully positive approach to life. Whether you were being charmed by Scott or lured into one of his playful and high-spirited jokes, he was always great fun to be with. He spent many wonderful hours at the Bohemian Club, the Pacific Union Club, and the Bollibokka Club on the McCloud River, and always looked forward to the annual lunches with his aging SAE fraternity brothers.
Scott was devoted to his wife Mer and her children, to his four boys and their wives and significant others, and to his grandchildren. His legacy to his family and friends is treasured, and he will be remembered for the qualities that made him so special; kind, polite, generous, enthusiastic, warm, playful, and endearingly sentimental, with an unsurpassed sense of humor and a touch of the mischievous.
Scott is survived by his wife, Mer James, step-children Chelsea Sheehan and Madison and Austin Stranahan; sons Todd (Catherine), Carter (Erin), Devin (Carina), and Brad; siblings Sandy, Patricia Duncan (Lansing), and John; former wife Corinne (Jim); and grandchildren Palmer, Crosby, Eloise, Bailey and Quinn. Scott was pre-deceased by his parents and his beloved golden retriever, Piper.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Scott’s memory can be made to Direct Relief International, 27 S. La Patera Lane, Santa Barbara, California 93117; the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation, 2320 Bath Street, Suite 107, Santa Barbara, CA 93105; or the Koegel Autism Center, Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA 93106-9490.
Justin Stenshol
On October 23, 2013, Justin Lee Stenshol, 25: a young man with a beautiful and generous heart, left his earthly body behind and went to be with his Father in Heaven. Justin had endured excruciating back pain after his back was crushed in an accident four years ago.
Justin accepted Christ as a young child and We can rest assured that he is in Heaven now, healthy, at peace and free of pain. This earth is only a temporary home (life is short) but eternity is forever. We know Justin would love to come back and tell others of Gods mercy and grace, “In Him We have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of God’s grace”, Ephesians 1:7, and to urge you to accept His free gift of eternal life.
Justin was passionate, adventurous, and had a natural talent and love for music. He played the guitar, trombone, piano and was also a songwriter, having written several of the songs he played with his band. Justin loved hiking & off-roading and his favorite thing to do was dirt bike riding with his Dad and brotherl Erik. l-le was very loyal to his family and friends and always there to help when needed.
Justin is survived by his loving mom, Dianna Miller (Jerry), his dad, Kevin Stenshol (Cricket), his brother, Erik (Allie), his Aunt Kris (Tim), his Uncle Gary (Carol), his Aunt Anita (David), eleven Cousins and many Close friends, who will cherish the memories they shared with him.
Although we will miss him immensely, we praise God for the 25 years we were blessed to spend with such a vibrant soul. “For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.” Psalms 139:13-14. We encourage you to take time today, not tomorrow, to tell your family and friends how much you love them, and to appreciate the gift of life.
A “Celebration of Justin’s Life” will be held on Saturday, November 23rd, at LifeWay Baptist Church, 673 VV. Santa Paula St, Santa Paula at 11:00am, with a luncheon reception to immediately follow in the Fellowship Hall.
