Lady Cardinal soccer team ready for another great year

The Santa Paula High School Lady Cardinal varsity soccer team has hopes of another great season as they begin action on the new SPHS field.

The girls placed second in league last year and plan on achieving at least that this year, while still looking at that first place position.  Oaks Christian High School was first last year.

Coach Jesus “Chuy” Cordova says he has 12 players returning from last year.  Among those players to especially watch this year, according to Cordova are, Taylor Alvarado, “Who will score a lot of goals this year again,” he noted.  “We have Mariela Cisneros; she’s going to be great.  She’s had a lot of improvement over the past year.  On defense we have Nadia Alvarez and senior Selini Salgado.  And then we have goalkeeper Clarissa Camacho, moving up from JV.  She’s a very good goalkeeper.  Then we have Lupita Magana controlling the middle.  She’ll be getting a lot of assists to Taylor and the other forwards.”

Cordova said Oaks Christian is the team to beat.  He added, “Our main goal is to beat Oaks Christian and hopefully take the title.”

He said the new field is awesome.  “The players have enjoyed practicing and they’re going to enjoy even more playing on it and competing against other teams,” he said.

The girls scrimmaged with Pacifica Monday.  Their first test will come next Monday when they host Santa Clara.  Varsity plays at 5:30 p.m.  There will not be a JV game.
