This 133rd County Fair with ocean air overlooks the Pacific in a setting as unique as the event itself, which runs through August 10.The Ventura County Fair highlights the county’s history, culture and agriculture, providing hands on learning experience for young and old, helping to develop a strong sense of community while promoting agriculture at the same time. The 12-day Fair features attractions including farm animals, fireworks, interesting exhibits, a huge commercial tent with bargains galore and a variety of competitions and displays to entertain all fair enthusiasts, as well as performances by some of the biggest names in entertainment. Midway rides, games of skill and mountains of mouth-watering food are on tap at the Fair.With a dynamite lineup of headline entertainment - The Doobie Brothers on Friday! - and plenty to see and do, this family event offers specials on everything from admission to events, including the massive carnival midway.“We had the Citrus Festival and the Citrus Classic Balloon Festival,” said Carol Woods of Santa Paula. “And now the Fair is starting... and I have grandchildren with animals!” Many Santa Paula youth involved with the area’s 4-H Clubs and Future Farmers of America are sure to be stars in the animal competitions, which cumulate with the Fair Auction.Fair gates open at 11 a.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. on the weekends, and admission is adults 13 and older, $9; children 6 to 12 $6; and seniors 62-plus $6. Children 5 and under are free, as are Super Seniors 100 years old and over.
Dollar Days - just $1 to get in! - are until 3 p.m. on July 30 and August 6. On August 1, Youth Day means children 12 and younger are admitted free all day. There is also free admittance on the August 5 Seniors and Persons with Disabilities Day, when the Fair will open early at 10 a.m. Military Appreciation Day, for those servicepersons with current valid identifications, is free on August 7.Carnival Wristband Days - always popular for those with the kids - are July 31, August 4, August 5 and August 7, with wristbands good for unlimited carnival rides until 7 p.m. sold for $25 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.Getting to the Fair - which has limited paid parking - gets easier every year. Save time, money and gas by taking a free shuttle or the Metrolink; relax and enjoy the ride to the front gate, no driving hassles and no parking scenarios. Free shuttles leave regularly from the County Government Center, Ventura High School, Pacific View Mall, Harbor Boulevard at Schooner Drive and State Beach. Weekend Metrolink service leaves from Chatsworth, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Camarillo and Oxnard.This year’s lineup of free Fair entertainment includes thrilling Motorsports (July 30-31 at 6 p.m.), and concerts (all start at 7:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted) by The Doobie Brothers (August 1), Sara Evans with Carlene Carter (August 2) Los Tigres del Norte (August 3, 3 p.m.), The Beach Boys (well, two of them) on August 4, Suzanne Somers August 5 at 1 p.m., Trace Adkins August 5, Raven Symone August 6, Plain White T’s August 7, Tower of Power with WAR August 8, and the PRCA Rodeo August 9-10 at 2 and 7 p.m.For more information call 648-3376 or visit the website, www.venturacountyfair.org.
