By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesIf you’re looking for a fun alternative for your Trick-or-Treater from walking in the dark from house to house on Halloween, you can’t beat the 16th Annual Halloween Carnival sponsored by the city’s Recreation Department. The carnival will be held October 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Community Center, and again promises to be a “really good event that keeps families safe” in a fun, Halloween-themed setting, according to Community Services Director Brian Yanez.Yanez told the City Council of this year’s Halloween Carnival at the October 17 meeting, noting that the annual event will feature games, a costume parade and plenty of that Halloween staple, candy. Yanez said that the Halloween Carnival is attended by hundreds of people each year who appreciate the safe harbor of celebrating the traditional holiday at the Community Center, where children are kept in a controlled environment for fun and games.
The community Halloween party is becoming more and more popular each year, said Vice Mayor Rick Cook. “For the past couple of years, my granddaughters have been going to the carnival and it’s packed,” due to the rising number of community members who flock to the annual event.Individuals and area businesses have been supportive of the city Halloween Carnival by donating goods and cash, said Yanez, including a sizeable contribution of $500 by Automotive Racing Products (ARP), “which enables us to get more candy for the event.”The Santa Paula Police Department, which earlier issued a comprehensive list of Halloween Safety Tips, notes that traffic safety is a Halloween concern, and that several instances of Trick-or-Treaters being struck by a vehicle have occurred in the city over the years. The Community Center’s Halloween Carnival is away from the streets, and allows the costumed youngsters to celebrate in an atmosphere where there will be plenty of other Trick-or-Treaters enjoying the indoor celebration.
