In fact, Veterans Memorial Park is seeing additional sprucing up after the City Council approved using grant funds to install the new benches as well as trash receptacles for the park. The council approved the $9,400 expenditure at the April 4 meeting.Veterans Memorial Park was the scene of the most recent Santa Paula Beautiful cleanup effort on March 12 that included weeding, combing the tot lot sand play area, planting, and painting the restroom complex.
According to the report by Public Works Director Cliff Finley, in May 2004 staff requested funds for a program to purchase park furnishings made from “recycled beverage material to be used to replace existing facilities.” Recycling now utilizes everything from plastic bottles to tires to create a variety of items, including outdoor furniture to handbags, even trendy costume jewelry.Last year the city’s skatepark opened in the northeastern portion of the park, which sits across the street from City Hall. Future park work will create more landscaping around the skatepark’s perimeter and seating areas for skate watchers. The park is home to the Veterans Memorial that honors Santa Paulans who lost their lives in four wars.In all, seven new benches and seven trash receptacles are being installed at Veterans Memorial Park. City public works staff has been submitting requests and receiving grant funds made available through the Department of Conservation, Division of Recycling. The $9,400 to cover the cost of the benches and trash receptacles was appropriated from the Beverage Container Grant fund.
