CHP Officer Steve Reid said that the accident occurred on Wednesday, March 23 at about 9:30 a.m.An earlier non-injury accident had stopped westbound traffic on Highway 126 “about a half-mile west of the Todd Barranca overpass,” when a white 1988 Acura Legend driving by Michael Lawrence Rericha, 24, of Santa Paula, approached the scene. Rericha was in the westbound number one lane, “swerved to avoid the traffic backup, and ended up sideswiping the left side” of a black 1988 Ford Ranger pickup in the number two lane driven by Raul Gonzalez, 29, also of Santa Paula.
Gonzalez’s Ford Ranger pickup overturned due to the impact of the crash, said Officer Reid. His passenger, Luis Gomez Labato, 33, of Santa Paula, received a spine fracture and cuts and bruises. Gonzalez received cuts and bruises to his head and his hand; Rericha was not injured. Labato was treated at the scene before being transported by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center. No charges in relation to the accident were filed, noted Officer Reid. “It was just an accident…there had been a previous traffic collision, Mr. Rericha came up on it kind of fast and tried to move over” when he saw that the traffic was stopped.
