By Peggy KellySanta Paula TimesIn spite of rain, the mood was festive for the 68th Annual Santa Paula Art & Photography Show awards reception held February 19 at Blanchard Community Library. The top dog, winner of not only the Best of Show, sponsored by Santa Paula Chevrolet, but also topping other major categories, was Charles G. Hodgson’s watercolor The Sentinel-Prairie Dog.About 200 art lovers and artists attended the reception, said Virginia Gunderson of the Santa Paula Society of the Arts, which again sponsored the annual show. “Rain did not deter the hearty art lovers in our area,” she noted, and although “not everyone stayed for the awards, some just come to gaze,” the Mardi Gras themed decorations were a big hit on a rainy day.Artist Judy Dressler used bright-colored tablecloths with matching balloons and the traditional Mardi Gras necklaces to create a fun, festive atmosphere for the discerning art lovers and artists, and area restaurants made sure there were plenty of nibbles suitable for art viewing. Cookies baked by SPSA members topped off the array of delicious snacks.During the event, “We had three special things occur,” noted Gunderson, the first being new sponsor Limoneira Co. funding the Founders-Judges prizes honoring the late Douglas Shively, Jessie Arms Botke and Cornelis Botke, all notable artists who created the annual exhibit, the oldest juried show in the state. “Without their inspiration and hard work, this show would not have been happening for all these 68 years,” said Gunderson, who studied art with her late Uncle Douglas Shively. “We are very grateful for the opportunity to remind our patrons of the dedication of these fine people, and again we thank the Limoneira Co. for their support.”Artist Robert Herrera announced that his family is donating $1,000 to the SPSA Scholarship Award in the name of John D. Herrera Jr. and family.“Because of his dedication to and support of our society, our members, and his funding of the mural depicting the Artists and Architects of Santa Paula, we presented an honorary life membership with our gratitude to Dr. Trygve Forland.”
Show Chairman Gerald Zwers was again the Master of Ceremonies, and without the “unquestioning help of BCL Librarian Dan Robles and his staff we would not ever be able to put on this show,” said Gunderson.Glenna Kurz, Laura Long and Christopher Zsarnay, acclaimed artists (oils-acrylics, watercolors and photography respectively), as well as teachers, were the judges for the show.Winners of the 68th Annual Art and Photography Show are:Peoples Choice/Pat Johnson Memorial, Santa Paula Chamber of Commerce: Oil & Acrylics, 1st Indian Pottery by Tony Jankowski; 2nd Pride by Yvonne Chaban; 3rd A Lovely Impression by Young Lee.
